Project Topics

1. RFID Data Management

In this project, we will develop an application on RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) hardware. The hardware consists of RFID tags, readers, and antennas. We will tag objects (e.g., books in the library) and people with RFID tags. The readers will detect the tags in their vicinity. Data received from the readers will be stored in a relational database (e.g., MySQL), on which queries can be posed. The queries can both be traditional one-time queries as well as real-time event detection queries (e.g., report when a person borrowed more books than s/he is allowed to). The system will be accessible through a web-based user interface. The project will provide hands-on experience on several important issues in RFID data management through building a system to support a real application (including data acquisition and cleaning, complex event detection and inference), which we will demo at the end of the semester.

2. Web/Desktop Search Engine

In this project we will develop a small desktop/Web search engine using components of the iMeMex project.

Project Members: Julia, Ivan, Christian, Mirwais
Supervisor: Jens Dittrich & Marcos Vaz Salles

3. SQLite in the Web Browser

We will write and integrate a SQL database into the Firefox Web browser. The ultimate goal is to run full applications inside a Web browser.

4. Benchmarking XQuery

XML is conceived as complicated and slow. This project tries to quantify this observation. The students are expected to take an existing commercial and/or open source implementation and test its performance. We will bug the vendors if we find problems.
