Architecture and Implementation of Database Systems

Content

This course reviews fundamental ideas and algorithms that are used in the construction of database systems. Topics to be covered include: query processing, query optimization, one-dimensional indexing, multi-dimensional indexing, performance aspects of database systems, database tuning, data layout, synchronisation, recovery. An additional purpose of this course is to give students the necessary background and tools to be able to write a MSc Thesis in the area of information systems.

News

(04-12-2007) The exam will be on Thursday, December 20, 2007, 2.15pm (approx. one hour), in room HG D7.2. You may bring two A4 sheets of paper (you may write on both sides) with handwritten notes (neither computer-generated content nor photocopies are allowed). No other material is allowed during the exam (e.g., no textbooks, slide printouts, electronic devices, etc.). Please bring your Legi.

The exercise sheets will be put online here one or two days after the lecture, e.g. on friday or saturday - therefore you should have ample time to solve them on sunday or the following week. We will discuss the exercises in the exercise group one week later.
