Advanced Topics in Information Systems

News and Announcements

Course Content

This seminar course will discuss research topics in the area of information systems. The topic of this semester is "Event Stream Processing".

Event Stream Processing (ESP) systems deal with low-latency computations (e.g., filtering, correlation, aggregation, transformation) on streams of data tuples that represent real-world events. These computations typically produce other events (a.k.a. "complex" or "composite" events) that can be further processed, which eventually trigger real-time actions or alerts.

ESP systems have recently gained significant attention from both academia and industry. Several university research prototypes have been built, some of which have already been commercialized. In the meantime, all of the big database vendors are looking for ways to extend their products to provide high-performance event processing capabilities.

In this seminar, we will investigate important research issues that arise in event stream processing systems. We will examine proposed contributions both on data modeling and query language design as well as on their efficient implementation and optimization in order to provide scalable event processing. We will read recent research papers, and present/discuss them in the class.
