Field Trip / Guest Lecture (Updated May 19!!!)

On May 23, there will be a guest lecture by Helsana. They will report on their data warehouse project and give experience and business cases. We will meet at 9:15 am, in our regular lecture hall: CAB, G 51. We will not meet at Helsana!

Exam

The exam will take place on May 30 from 9am - 11am in CAB G51 (regular time, regular lecture hall).

You may bring to the exam your print-outs of the lecture slides. If your print-outs of the slides contain annotations, those annotations will be allowed. Therefore, you do not need to make a fresh print-out. Except for the print-outs of the lecture slides, you are NOT allowed to bring any material (books, notes, exercise sheets, etc) to the exam.

You will have 60 minutes to solve the exam.

Contents

This course presents the principles of decision support systems and so-called online-analytic processing (OLAP). The course will cover the following topics:

1. Motivation and Architecture
2. Modelling for OLAP: Star Schemas and Snow Flake Schemas
3. SQL Extensions for Decision Support (Cube, Aggregation sets, Pivot, etc.)
4. Demo of a Business Intelligence Tool (BTell)
5. Implementation Techniques (bitmap indexes, materialized views, star joins, ...)
6. Query optimization on virtual databases (federated, heterogeneous databases)
7. Data mining (classification trees, association rule mining, outlier detection)
8. Data cleaning, identity reconciliation
9. Probabilistic databases, data lineage
10. Dataspace Management
11. Industry talks

Articles of the research literature on databases and information systems (e.g., SIGMOD and VLDB). Exact references will be given in the lecture notes.

Exam

The exam will be on May 30 from 9am to 11am (during the regular slot of the lecture).
