This advanced seminar course explores current research issues that arise in large-scale data management systems. Topics vary from year to year. This years theme is "Sensor Data Management".
Sensors are electronic devices that make physical measurements about their environment. They range from tiny and cheap RFID tags to larger and more expensive cameras or satellites. A large number of these devices can be connected through (usually wireless) networks to collectively monitor certain events of interest, like environmental conditions such as temperature, motion, and so forth. These sensor networks further help us achieve sensing, computation, communication, and actuation under a single infrastructure.
In the past several years, sensor networks have become an active area of research for many different communities including networking, operating systems, programming languages, databases, security, algorithms, and so forth. In this class, we will mainly focus on the data management problems that have been investigated by the database community, but we will also briefly look at some works from networking and systems communities that are highly relevant and complementary to data management.
We will read recent research papers, and present/discuss them in the class. We will cover the following topics:
This is a research-oriented course. Participants are expected to actively involve in the class discussions. It would also be a good opportunity for finding project topics for students who are looking for ideas for their semester or thesis work.

1. Each class participant will give 1 or 2 presentations in the class, depending on the final enrollment count.
2. Presenters, 2 days before your presentation: Please meet with the instructor to go over the slides that you prepared.
3. All participants, every week before coming to the class: Please pick one of the papers to be presented that week, prepare a short review (at most 1 page), and email it to the instructor in pdf format. The email subject line should read "[HotDMS] Paper Review <Month/Day>". The reviews should have the following outline.
Here is the list of papers that we will read.
| Presentations | 50% |
| Paper reviews | 25% |
| Participation in discussions | 25% |
