Introduction to Database Systems

Contents

This lecture presents the basic tools required for the development of database applications. The focus is on relational database systems and applications that can be built using relational database technology.

The following topics will be covered: E/R and UML modelling, the relational data model, relational design theory (normal forms), SQL, database intregrity, security, a brief introduction to transactions and data warehousing (OLAP).

Exam Information

Klausureinsicht will be on September 19th and 21th between 8am and 12pm.

Exam results are available. Please use your n.ethz username and password when accessing them.

Exam Date: 20.07.2006, 10:15 (please be at there at around 10:00)

Closed book - no notes allowed

A successful project (both parts) is needed to be allowed to the exam

Because we cannot organize another exercise group session for all the students, you can send e-mails with your questions related to the exam (exercises, courses etc) or you can come directly to CAB.

Project Presentation (Second Part)

From 6 July to 13 July, you will have to present the second part of your project to one of the teaching assistants (Students in Eric's group should contact Irina, Floraine and Julia).

Please send an email to one of the teacher assistants (Irina, Floraine and Julia) to make an appointment:

* You are going to present your project with your groupmates together.
* You are going to present with the group that you are integrating with.
* If your group consists of students from different exercise groups, you only have to present to one of the teaching assistants, once only.

Goal

Good understanding of relational database systems. Ability to use database systems to develop database applications.
